Dracaena (Large)

Dracaena features: There are many species of Dracaena that can be grown indoors. Some Dracaena species stand out with their red leaves, while others are known for leaves with red stripes along the edges. There are also Dracaena species whose leaves are yellow or light green on the outside or in the centre; the Madagascar dragon tree is one example. In their natural tropical habitats, some Dracaena species can grow to almost 6 metres tall.

Among living room plants, Dracaena stands out for its size. Growing up to 2 metres tall indoors, Dracaena counts among the large houseplants. However, there are also small Dracaena species that take up little space, such as lucky bamboo, which make good kitchen or bedroom plants. Some Dracaena plants, such as D. marginata tricolor, also known as the Marginata plant, can have leaves in several colours.

Light: Indoors, they love bright, indirect light.

Soil: They need well-draining, slightly acidic potting or garden soil.

Watering: Water regularly in spring and summer, and reduce watering in winter.

Humidity: If needed, increase the indoor humidity in winter.

Fertilising: Feed monthly with a water-soluble fertiliser.

Pruning: If necessary, prune in spring or summer to control the plant's growth.

Pets: This plant can be toxic to our animal friends if eaten, so it is best kept away from pets.

The meaning of Dracaena: The rich variety of the Dracaena genus makes it a popular plant both in its natural habitat and indoors. The meaning of the Dracaena lies in its Ancient Greek root, the word "drakaina", which means "female dragon".
